Web Design Concerns

Do you understand what’s involved in putting your business on the web? Here are some of the frequently asked questions about web design and development.

Q: What are the steps of building a website?

A: The steps for building a website are:

1. Register a Domain Name. Nowadays, it is pretty hard to get a domain name that is both short and can be easily remembered. It’s a wild guess that all the words including the letters and abbreviations in the dictionary are already taken. Perhaps you can take your chance at the hard words to spell and the phonetic transcriptions :)  In short wishing for your company’s exact acronym or name to be available is like hoping against hope. Finding it available is like winning the jackpot in the lottery (which, if we may add…rarely happens:) We recommend choosing a domain name that reflects your company’s products, services, industry or search keywords. Even if it is quite long, no worries because those keywords in your domain name can be tracked by search engine crawlers. Hence, you increase your page rank. For example, whiteningcapsules.com is not really the company’s name but they opted to use this domain name because it represents what their products are and acts as keywords as well. So, as early as possible, register whatever available domain name that you can find and move on.

2. Determine your site’s goals. Do you want to sell online? Promote your company or organization?  Test new products and services? Who is your target market?

3. Organize your content. What will be the pages on your website and what should be displayed on each of them?

4. As soon as you submit your materials to your web designer, then he can already start making a web design draft. Once the draft is approved, the web designer can proceed to building the website and writing the HTML codes.

5. Publish the website. When every element is in place, it’s time to elect your web host so that your site can be viewed on the World Wide Web.

Q: How long does it take to build a website?

A: It depends on the availability of the client’s materials that will be used.

Some clients can supply everything that their web designer needs right away and some take their sweet time. Oftentimes, a client may like a draft but they want certain revisions. This is the time-consuming part. Making changes, showing it to the client, waiting for their response and back again to making changes may seem endless but as web designers we just need to figure out what the client wants. Once we hit the bull’s eye, that’s one less worry for us. Given ideal conditions – materials are available and the draft finally approved – we can say that a site can be finished within a week…two weeks tops!

Q: How do you determine pricing?

A: Two factors are involved in determining the pricing of our web design projects:

1. Content – such as number of pages, functionalities, Flash animations, pictures, and other requested website add-ons to our existing web design packages. Simply put, the more bells and whistles, the more the site costs. Consult your web designer first so that you won’t be overwhelmed with the additional fees later on.

2. Amount of work - we would have to consider the complexity of your specifications. Some tasks that would require higher fees are e-commerce website development, online payment gateway integration, forum and blog integration, and database management.  In other words, web design work that will require more sleepless nights and possible aneurysm would definitely cost you a little bit more:)
